The story of Spanx shapewear is an interesting one. It is part of the life story of its creator Sara Blakely.
It all started with her facing a bleak future having failed her law exam twice. After her LSAT failures, Sara stated selling fax machines door-to-door in St. Petersburg, Florida Soon she rose to the position of national sales manager with the company. But she was more ambitious.
'I did standup comedy at night in different cities for fun, because I couldn't fraternize with the people I was training,' Sara recalls. 'One night I was going to be on stage but I couldn't figure out what to wear under my white pants that wouldn't show lines. So I cut the feet out of my panty hose. That's when I had my epiphany.'
An informal meeting with a group of her friends-most of whom also had cut the feet off their hose some time-convinced Sara about the viability of her product - footless panty hose.
So Sara got into action. She researched and wrote her own patent for footless pantyhose. She created the name 'Spanx shapewear'. She is also responsible for the quirky slogan of spanx shapewear - 'We've got your butt covered!'
During the next two years she put in $5,000 of her own money into getting a prototype of spanx shapewear made. In 2000 she began selling Spanx shapewear in major department stores such as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Soon she received a life changing call- from Oprah Winfrey who loved the idea of body slimming, toeless panty hose and she featured Spanx shapewear as one of her annual favorite things. The rest is history.
